Note : Here's a classic piece of 80s cheese, just the title (standing for "Cannibalistic Humanoid Underground Dwellers", natch) should tip you off, but it's actually a much better film that you might give it credit for. Story and direction are solid, the cast, lead by John Heard, Daniel Stern, Christopher Curry and Kim Greist, is great, there's even a small appearance by a very young John Goodman as a lecherous cop who meets a sticky end, and it's just all around well made and entertaining, as well as at times pretty tense. The creature and gore effects are well done and original, too. Highly recommended, you'll likely be as positively surprised as I was.

A serious of bizarre murders and disappearances in New York City seem to be somehow connected to the sewers, and NYPD captain Bosch has a personal stake in the case; his wife is one of the missing. George Cooper, once a famous fashion photographer, is now dedicating himself to documenting the plight of the NYC homeless population, especially those living underground in tunnels and sewers. Together, they try to get to the bottom of the mystery, with the help of Shepherd, who runs a homeless shelter and claims everything is caused by a government conspiracy, which turns out to be close to the truth, since the murderous monsters were once homeless people, mutated by exposure to toxic waste the government has secretly been discarding in the sewers, and Wilson, from the Nuclear Regulatory Comission, is willing to do anything to keep a lid on the story, as disappearances increase and monsters start rampaging through the night streets.

This is not a very new remaster, but it's pretty good quality, with nice contrast and color (maybe slightly oversaturated), decent detail, and fair grain. The original theatrical mono sounds fine, and the commentary track is interesting. The composer interview and score is also good if you're interested in that particular part of the production.
