Description:

Peeping Tom (1960), directed by Michael Powell, Arthaus 4k remaster, encoded in 10 bit HEVC with AAC sound, including original theatrical dual mono, two commentary tracks, and subtitles in five languages.

IMDb : https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0054167/

Video encoded in two-pass 13.0 Mbps x265 10bit with the veryslow preset for archive quality image. Audio encoded separately with Apple AAC for the highest-quality AAC sound available. Text subtitles converted to SRT, image subtitles converted to VobSub and repositioned.

Note : Another new 4k remaster which lets me do an improved version of a personal favorite. Known to many as "the first slasher movie", this is really more reminiscent of Hitchcock's Psycho (although this actually premiered a few months earlier). It also reminds me of gialli, maybe especially early Mario Bava stuff, also in the visual style, which is really great. There's no big twist, and the identity of the murderer is clear from the very beginning, but the denouement is still unpredictable. It's pretty solid psychodrama, with Carl Boehm putting in a great performance as a character that's by turns menacing and pitiable. The supporting cast is very solid too. There's also a lot going on thematically, with filming, photography, observation and voyeurism very central, and it's set partially on a film set.

Mark Lewis works as a camera assistant on feature films, and moonlights as a pinup photographer. However, he's also a serial killer who films women as he murders them, creating what he refers to as a documentary film. He starts a tentative relationship with a young woman living in his building, but can't quite give up on his compulsive behavior, which, it appears, is due to psychological experiments performed on him by his father when he was a child. As one of his victims is found on the movie set where he works, and the police start closing in, Mark will have to decide what to do about his new-found relationship, and how to create an ending for his documentary.

This 4k remaster looks quite good, although I think it's still from an interpositive or similar, but the grain structure is nice, the color and contrast pop with hyperstylized flair. The soundtrack is fine, the two commentary tracks interesting.

Hot tip

HeVK torrents always have lots of keywords. Try searching for “hevk serial killer” for more repeated, compulsive murder, “hevk slasher” for more stalking and stabbing, or “hevk 60s” for more from the decade when horror took on a whole new edge.
