Penny Dreadful is a British-American horror drama television series created for Showtime and Sky by John Logan, who also acts as executive producer alongside Sam Mendes. The show was originally pitched to several US and UK channels, and eventually landed with Showtime,with Sky Atlantic as co-producer. It premiered at the South by Southwest film festival on March 9 and began airing on television on April 28, 2014, on Showtime on Demand. The series premiered on Showtime on May 11, 2014, the first in an eight-episode season.After the third-season finale on June 19, 2016, series creator John Logan announced that Penny Dreadful had ended as the main story had reached its conclusion.
The title refers to the penny dreadfuls, a type of 19th-century British fiction publication with lurid and sensational subject matter. The series draws upon many public domain characters from 19th-century British and Irish fiction, including Dorian Gray from Oscar Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray; Mina Harker, Abraham Van Helsing, Dr. Seward, Renfield, and Count Dracula from Bram Stoker's Dracula; Victor Frankenstein and his monster from Mary Shelley's Frankenstein; and Dr. Henry Jekyll from Robert Louis Stevenson's Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde.
Vanessa rimasta da sola a Londra cade in un profondo stato di depressione, così l'amico egittologo Lyle le consiglia di andare a fare visita alla Dr. Florence Seward. Ethan decide di credere alla ragazza perché non riesce a perdonarsi per i massacri compiuti in passato ed inseguito dagli sceriffi federali e da sir Malcolm si dirige verso casa del padre per ucciderlo. Una volto giunto a destinazione la verità sul suo passato viene rivelata, e dopo un cruento scontro a fuoco solo Ethan, Malcom e Kaetenay escono dalla casa, ed insieme ripartono per Londra per aiutare Vanessa.
Vanessa, su consiglio della dottoressa, si era dedicata a nuove attività per combattere la depressione, così incontra in un museo e incomincia a frequentare il Dr Alexander Sweet. Questo si rivelerà essere in realtà Dracula che proverà e riuscirà a sedurre Vanessa facendo calare una notte perenne su tutta Londra.
Lily è diventata nel frattempo una spietata assassina, che aiutata da Dorian Gray sempre in cerca di nuove emozioni forti, incita le donne oppresse, le prostitute e le ragazze violentate a farsi vendetta con la violenza. Il dottor Victor Frankenstein con l'aiuto del suo amico il dottor Harry Jekyll cercano un modo per far dimenticare a Lily il suo passato e quindi renderla una creature docile e buona. |

They encounter some of literature's most terrifying characters, including Dr. Frankenstein, Dorian Gray, the Wolfman and iconic figures from the novel Dracula.
