Note : How some more Amicus horror for you, but, from before Amicus started making anthology films, and much more in the style of what Hammer was doing at the time. It even features two of Hammer's biggest stars, Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee, and the rest of the cast is a veritable who's who of British horror and genre actors, including Patrick Wymark, Jill Bennett, Nigel Green, Patrick Magee, Peter Woodthorpe, Michael Gough, and George Coulouris. The story is a fun one, based on a short story by Robert Bloch, and concerns the exhumed skull of the Marquis de Sade, which has passed through the hands of a number of owners who all tend to meet sticky ends involving violence, murder, and suicide. As usual with Freddie Francis, the cinematography and visuals are great, reminding me a bit of 60s Mario Bava, with the dramatic colored light and inventive camera angles.

In the 19th century, a French phrenologist exhumes the head of the Marquis de Sade, boiling it to remove the flesh, but some horrible fate befalls him, to the shock of his concubine. In modern-day London, Maitland, a collector of occult memorabilia, is approached by Marco, a none too honest dealer of antiques, and offered the skull. He learns the skull has been stolen from his friend Sir Matthew Phillips, but Phillips does not want it back, and warns Maitland it exerts an evil influence. When Maitland finds Marco mysteriously dead, he takes the skull, unwittingly setting himself on a path to madness, death, and destruction.

This remaster was not fantastic, likely a telecine transfer, but I've made some tweaks, including slightly reducing noise and boosting color saturation, which was a bit anemic, and I think it looks pretty acceptable now. Original dual mono sounds fine, no extras.

HeVK torrents always have lots of keywords. Try searching for “hevk supernatural horror” for more spirits and spooks, “hevk british” for more from the country of posh collectors of unsavory antiques, or “hevk 60s” for more from the decade when Cushing and Lee were unstoppable.
