Note : Probably to the surprise of no one, one of my favorite directors working today is David Fincher, and this might be his masterpiece. Serial killers are a long-time obsession of his, of course, but this is unique amongst serial killer/police procedural/newspaper movies, in that the mystery is never resolved, and in fact, it's impossible to resolve. It pushes the viewer into Graysmith's point of view of obsessively trying to make the pieces fit, every new clue twisting the whole thing up, but also subtly contradicting previous ones, until you either allow the whole thing to unravel, or start seeing patterns that aren't there. A uniquely realistic take on the genre, while also being beautifully shot in menacing darkness with barely penetrating light, and sporting an ensemble cast so huge I couldn't even fit all of the important ones in the title, but it includes Jake Gyllenhaal, Mark Ruffalo, Anthony Edwards, Robert Downey Jr., Chloë Sevigny, Elias Koteas, John Carroll Lynch, Brian Cox, Charles Fleischer, Philip Baker Hall, and many others. This extended version of the film has become my favorite, maybe because I can soak in the oppressive atmosphere for longer. So satisfying in its denial of satisfaction.

When the Zodiac killer starts sending cryptic letters to the San Franscisc Chronicle, cartoonist Robert Graysmith takes an interest, but is initially rebuffed by crime reporter Paul Avery and the editors. However, after more murders occur, Graysmith manages to come up with insights about the letters, and slowly becomes involved in the newspaper's investigation. SFPD inspector Dave Toschi and his partner Bill Armstrong are assigned to the case, liaising with police in Vallejo and Napa, and an apperance on live TV by lawyer Melvin Belli leads to a phone call from the supposed killer, but solid leads are hard to come by. The police speak to Arthur Leigh Allen, and later search his trailer, but a handwriting expert excludes Allen as the killer, even though family members insist he's ambidextrous. As the years pass, Graysmith becomes obsessive and starts thinking about writing a book, while Avery sinks into alcoholism and leaves the Chronicle, and Toschi is demoted after accusations he forged a Zodiac letter. Graysmith's obsession deepens as he appears on TV talking about his book project, and he starts receiving anonymous phone calls, and when he loses his job, his wife leaves him, taking the children with her, which sends him into a dangerous spiral, but actual answers are slippery and hard to come by.

This film was shot on early digital, and although it looks great, it's never going to get a 4k remaster or anything significantly higher quality than what we have here, but it's good enough. It's nearly grain free, but I've tried to conserve what little there is, and contrast, color, and detail is very nice, with a lot of subtle details in the many very deep shadows. 5.1 track also sounds very good, and both the commentary tracks are well worth it for fans and Zodiac obsessives.

HeVK torrents always have lots of keywords. Try searching for “hevk serial killer” for more sequences of murders, many of them inspired by this real-life case, “hevk true crime” for more crime stories more or less loosely based on true events, or “hevk 2000s” for more from the decade when Fincher rode the crest of his career.
